The Tabloid Paintings comprising The Oakham Sketch and Rutland Scenes aim to demonstrate my passion for both painting and typography. These paintings are an ongoing series which I produce occasionally. The selections will be added to and I also intend to develop more themes. The idea of combining brush strokes with words, printed or hand written, is not new. The Cubists were the first to do this, I believe. My interest in type and its application started when studying Graphic Design at Art College, which in turn lead to a career in publishing, designing magazines and newspapers. The ‘look’ of the written word is very important to me and it seems a natural progression to producing marks only, to combining the two elements in the one outcome. Using the concept of a fictitious newspaper front page provides the theme with paint and, sometimes, collage applied over.
There are a few paintings available for purchase in the current selections.
